More Adults SAILING More Often

One of the RYA's primary objectives is to inspire more adults to go sailing more often. The RYA Sport Development Department is keen to engage with RYA clubs and training centres who wish to see more adults sailing/windsurfing more often. The initial key focus is encouraging existing sailors to get more active and out on the water more often, but will naturally include attracting new comers to the sport. Funding for this initiative has come through a successful application to Sport England as part of the RYA Whole Sport Plan 2009 - 2013.

A key project is the Regional Club Coaches Scheme for Adults, launched this year. Working with your RYA Regional Development Officer we can actively assist clubs and centres through the Regional Club Coaches Scheme (RCC's) to encourage their members and participants to go afloat on a regular basis. RCC's work in partnership with key RYA clubs and training centres offering practical advice and support to encourage regular sailing activity.

Although this is a relatively new initiative we have already helped in the process of helping a number of clubs and training centres to identify and deliver (through sports development plans) the following:

*    Volunteer training days: e.g. training sessions for people interested in becoming instructors or senior instructor and pre-season/end of season instructor training days

*    Training courses of benefit to club volunteers. e.g. contributing towards the cost of and delivery of instructor training courses; start racing courses; powerboat courses; first aid courses and race officials courses

*    Helping clubs become RYA Training Centres or extend their existing recognition

*    Running class specific training days for clusters of clubs in an area

*    Advice on marketing and promoting your club or training centre

*    Improved web based resources offering best practice for club development

*    Advice on funding opportunities

Please note that this funding is limited. Therefore if you want to get involved with the scheme get in touch with your RYA Regional Development Officer -  Sally Kilpatrick:  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Funding:

Sport England Small Grants Scheme --

http://funding.sportengland.org/funding_programmes/small_grants.aspx

The small grants programme will provide funding for community-level activities that help people become involved in sport, keep people in sport or help people improve their performance at their chosen sport. We anticipate this fund will be used for example, for purchasing sports equipment for local clubs, running coaching activities for the community and getting more coaches qualified. The fund will be efficient at getting small amounts of funding to grassroots sport in England.

The programme will be open to bona fide not-for-profit organisations, including applicants from sports clubs, voluntary or community organisations, local authorities, education establishments (such as schools, colleges and universities). Projects will need to demonstrate how they contribute to growing and sustaining participation in community sport or helping improve performance in sport. Funding will not be available to individuals.

PARTICIPATION

ADULT PARTICIPATION PROGRAMME INCREASING INSTRUCTOR NUMBERS

The number of dinghy, windsurfing and power boating instructors in clubs and training centres across England has risen by almost 1,500 in the last year following the launch of the RYA's Adult Participation Programme, funded through Sport England, which aims to increase and develop the number of adults regularly sailing and windsurfing.

Graham Manchester, head of the RYA Adult Participation Programme says: "We are delighted with these new figures. They show that clubs are investing in their volunteers through instructor training courses. These volunteers are then helping to raise the opportunities and quality of on water sessions run at clubs across England.  We believe we are building strong foundations through supporting the volunteers within clubs which will result adults having more opportunities to sail and sail more often.

Since beginning the project in 2009, the RYA has contracted 49 RYA Regional Club Coaches (RCC's) who are working alongside RYA Regional Development Officers (RDO's) helping clubs with planning and organisation, volunteers, new training courses and even organising windsurfing and instructor days, all of which will entice new members and encourage existing ones to sail more regularly. There are now 200 clubs across England working with RCCs.

North East and Yorkshire RYA Regional Development Officer Suzie Blair explains: "The RYA Regional Club Coaches are a real asset to clubs and it has been great to work with them to provide individual support to clubs.

"We almost doubled the number of instructor training courses in the region and one particular success has been working with Rotherham Sailing Club, where volunteers have become dinghy Instructors and safety boat drivers."

NAVIGATION

NEW RYA ONLINE CEVNI TEST GOES LIVE

It is now possible to take your CEVNI test online, anywhere, anytime through the RYA's new e-learning website; RYA Interactive (www.ryainteractive.org)

The CEVNI test is the code governing navigation on the European inland waterways. It includes rules and signs that skippers of pleasure craft are expected to know and follow. A test of these rules is a required by anyone needing an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) endorsed for inland waters.

The online test is an alternative to the paper based test that has been in operation since the 90s and vastly improves the ease of access for those living many miles from their nearest RYA centre.

There is a practice test on the site so you can make sure you're up to speed before taking the test and if you need a little training or revision, RYA training centres and books can provide help.

When you're ready to take the test for real, simply contact one of the RYA clubs or centres registered to offer the test and they can guide you through the process.

For further information and a list of centres offering the online test, email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

WINDSURFING

T15 Season Ready to Start

The first event of the West Zone T15 interclub series will be at Astbury Watersports, Congleton on 29th May.

TEAM RACING

Team Extreme Take Wilson Trophy at West Kirby

The final day of the 2010 Wilson Trophy dawned beautifully bright and clear and following a brief delay to allow the wind to build strength and stabilise in direction, racing for the final part of the round robin element got underway.

The semi-final pairings threw up both all American and all West Kirby matches. In the American semi, Team Extreme Team defeated New York Red two wins to nil. West Kirby Hawks also won their tense local derby match against West Kirby Sailing Club two races to zero.

In the final, Team Extreme looked to have handed the first race to the West Kirby Hawks when two of their boats were caught OCS, but they fought back and inflicted two penalties on the Hawks, giving Team Extreme a 1,2,3 at the finish. Race two of the Grand Final got off to an even start with Team Extreme eking out a narrow 2,3,4 advantage by the top mark. Team Extreme very effectively locked down the race on the last leg, taking their second win to go two nil up in the Grand Final. Race three was hard fought, but ended in a convincing 1,2,3 for Team Extreme.

So Team Extreme from the USA, - Zach Brown & Emmet Smith, Adam & Melanie Roberts and Stuart McNay & Abby Coplin - who had dominated the qualification rounds so comprehensively, pulled off an equally dominant whitewash victory in the Grand Final and become deserved winners of the 2010 Wilson Trophy British Open Team Racing Championship.

West Kirby Sailing Club is grateful for the generous sponsorship of the following companies; Buckley Industrial, Carlsberg, Deeside Services, G.L. Watson, Hilbre Off Sales, Musto, Peninsular Dev. NW, Rondar Raceboats, Serenity Clinic, Uren Food Group, West Kirby Lettings.

ACTIVATE LASERS

ACTIVATE YOUR LASER FLEET AND WIN A DAY WITH PAUL GOODISON AT YOUR CLUB

Entries are now open for the first 'Activate Your Laser 2010 Fleet Award for Innovation'. Anyone who has taken part in an 'Activate' workshop (Activators) and their fellow club members could be in with the chance to win a day with Activate Ambassador Paul Goodison.

All the 'Activators' need to do is to complete the following easy steps:

1)    Create a short report on the most innovative method used to get Lasers back in the water at their sailing club, including photographs and quotes from those involved.

2)    Email the report, photographs and a short outline of what they would like Paul to do at their club to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . For example you may want Paul share some top tips on how to get ahead on a race course or have a master class on sailing up and downwind in your Laser.

Finally, Activators are encouraged to post a summary of their report on the Activate Your Laser Fleet Facebook page with some images of the activities going on at their clubs, that way other clubs and Activators can see just whatever one else is getting up to and share your great ideas and success stories.

The 'Activator' and club members who showcase the most innovating plans will win a day with Skandia Team GBR's Paul Goodison who currently holds the Olympic, World and European titles.

The 'Activate Your Laser Fleet' programme aims to increase adult participation in sailing by reinvigorating activity in the number of under used Laser fleets across the country.

The closing date for entries is 30 June 2010.

PARTNERS

RYA launches new Partner Programme

The RYA has launched its brand new Partner Programme that will allow training centres, clubs, class associations and any other third party to offer RYA publications and selected shop items through their own websites whilst at the same time providing an easier way to earn commission on the products sold.

Join the partner programme

The programme provides registered parties with all the necessary links and promotional banners to advertise RYA products on their site and with the whizzy behind the scenes technology, developed by the RYA, can track orders placed through their site in return for a percentage commission on the sale.

Easy access

Steen Ingerslev, RYA Business Development Manager said: "Following discussions with a number of RYA training centres and clubs we realised that with our ever growing range of titles; there are currently over 100 RYA publications and DVDs available, it wasn't practical or feasible for all the items to be stocked at the centres.  By introducing the Partner Programme we can make all our publications easily accessible online.

"The programme is a great enhancement to any website, with the added benefit of the provider making some money at the same time and it's completely free."

How to join up

The process for joining the Partner Programme is easy and user friendly with all the necessary information readily available on the RYA website at www.rya.org.uk/go/partner, but there is a dedicated contact point should you have any problems setting yourself up ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Partners will initially have access to text and image links for their site, product links and banners, whilst in the future there will also be video and reviews links and articles, everything they need to promote the Partner Programme on their site.

"We will also be providing registered partners with regular updates and newsletters on special offers, new product releases on an ongoing basis and also the opportunity to provide feedback to us to what does and doesn't work well and allow partners to share best practice and ideas so that we can make the programme a real success", continued Steen.

"RYA training centres and affiliated clubs will earn slightly more commission than non RYA related sites but everyone will benefit from a special Performance Bonus Rate which will be calculated on a quarterly basis compared to the same time period from the previous year", explained Steen, "just another little added incentive."

To join the training centres, clubs and other users that have already registered for the new FREE Partner Programme, or to find out more visit www.rya.org.uk/go/partner or if you have any queries email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
